My jaw dropped when I found this piece! This highly collectible Mid-Century Modern painting of a fishing wharf was produced by VanGuard Studios, an American company founded by artist Lee Reynolds Burr in the 1960s with the aim of bringing art to the masses.

VanGuard studio paintings were copied from original designs using an assembly line system - black outlines were first silk-screened onto canvas, then artists in the production line would hand-paint around the outline based on the master design. These paintings were sold to furniture stores and interior decorators, making having an “original” painting (or rather, a convincing reproduction) accessible for middle-class Americans.

This piece is just over 3 feet tall and includes the original certificate and re-order ticket on the back. Similar pieces online are listed for much more (up to $2,000!).

Size: 30.75”w x 36.5”h

Condition: Painting is in fantastic condition. Frame has some minor wear (nicks and scrapes) consistent with age.

Hanging mechanism: Sawtooth on back.
