I am truly in love with both this painting and its frame.

The painting is a unique seascape—the artist uses the direction of their brushstrokes to lend movement to light, water and clouds. Pastel tones flow in a curve from the sun breaking through a dissipating storm, and waves break on a rocky outcropping in a burst of seafoam. Signed on the bottom right “AV McQ”.

The frame is made from solid wood carved in intricate curls that mimic the shape of the waves. It’s very heavy and came to me originally with layers on layers of caked-on dust. Though I can’t precisely date it, I’m quite sure it’s at least 100 years old, and suspect it’s even older than that. There is some writing on the back (photo 8 - an illegible word followed by “1631 20x24 3645”) and small remnants of newspaper or book pages that have adhered to the paint or glue (photo 9 - I can make out something about cleaning a chesterfield).

Size: 34”w x 30”h

Condition:

  • Painting: The painting has some stubborn yellowing consistent with age, mostly noticeable on the “splash” (see photo 4). Minor cracking and wear as consistent with age.

  • Frame: The frame is in really incredible condition for its age. I have refinished the white border with matte acrylic paint as it was previously quite chipped and messy. Some surface cracks to the wood that don’t affect the stability of the frame. Otherwise this is a very solid, incredibly intricate antique piece!

Hanging mechanism: Wire on back.
